Emerging Alternative R&B singer-songwriter Earth Angel redefines grief and loss in an incredibly poignant and relatable way on her most personal track yet.

Following the release of her single ‘Love from E8’, comes Earth Angel’s ‘Virgo Boy’ and this demo track is perfectly raw.

The song was written by Earth Angel to honour the loss of her friend. The track opens with a religious scripture spoken in Korean and her angelic harmonies are layered over a delicate piano. Emotionally evoking lyrics tell the story of Earth’s relationship with both love and loss.

Earth Angel on the track ‘Virgo Boy’:

Sometimes in life, you meet people and just connect instantly. With my friend, that was the case. It was like I had known him for years and years and I had this deep sense of unconditional love for him. He was a man of character, style and charisma. Everyone that he met, he touched in some way. His favourite song that he would play for hours on end around our flat was ‘Dance Monkey’ by Tones and I. I wanted to include a reference to this in the outro to honour him.

Below, I have broken down a few of the lyrics from ‘Virgo Boy’ that I’d like to shed light on.

“Can’t help but hate the place that raised you”

My friend had a very unique and different start to life compared to most people. Being raised in North Korea through his childhood and spending his teenage years trying to escape. He sat with me one night and told me his story in depth over Heineken beers. He was the most resilient person I have ever met and probably will ever meet. He said to me that night “Write about my story in your music Leia” And that I will.

“Stitching that jacket for design school”

Before he died, my friend was working on a fashion project for university. He was so passionate and driven, and had goals to be the best designer and be high up with brands like Gucci and Louis Vuitton. He was an amazing fashion designer and had the best taste in clothes. I would often ask him what accessories he thought I should match with the outfit I was wearing. He was highly critical, as Virgos are, but I always knew to trust his judgement.

Death taught me that we never really die. Physically, yes, but our spirit lives on. Losing the physical existence of someone you love, knowing you will never ever see them again is a pain that not much can compare to. But the faith that there is more to life than what we can see with our eyes, more out there beyond the physical realm, that is what keeps me going through grief.
